Color and texture : Pigeon peas are actually beans – with a mealy texture and a sweet, robust flavor. They taste excellent on their own, but also readily absorb the aromas of other ingredients. If you want your peas to retain their shape even after cooking, our Toor Dal are the perfect legume for you!
Versatile Uses : Due to their mealy texture, pigeon peas are the perfect accompaniment to spinach, green beans, tomatoes, and hearty greens. In India, toor dal is prepared in a variety of ways: as spinach dal, fenugreek dal, or sambar vegetable stew. It's no surprise that pigeon peas have conquered all of India—and soon your pantry too!
Your benefits : Toor Dal are so popular for good reason: they are extremely nutritious, gentle on the stomach, and satisfying – all with a low energy density! Delicious food that naturally supports your weight loss and health, and tastes great too? Toor Dal contains important proteins, energy-boosting carbohydrates, fats, and fiber, which are said to help with digestive issues. Just one serving of our Toor Dal provides folic acid, fiber, and protein – the latter also making it the ideal post-workout meal!
Preparation : Soak your pigeon peas for at least 30 minutes up to four hours. Then cook them for 8 minutes in a pressure cooker; cooking in a regular pressure cooker takes hardly any longer. Always rinse beans and peas thoroughly with clean water before cooking!
Fun Fact : Toor Dal were called 'pigeon peas' by the British. For them, the small beans weren't a viable protein source; they clearly preferred meat. So they named the peas after the animal that seemed to love them: the pigeon! We're relieved that they continued to be prepared as a tasty specialty in India. We wouldn't want to miss them!
Storage : Store your pigeon peas in an airtight, dry container in your pantry or another cool, dark place.
